Otterton Mill is very pleased to stock The Devon Food Book. Written by the late Carol Trewin, this wonderful book explores the relationship between the region's landscape and the food on our plates. Devon produces some of the best food in Britain, from meat to fish and shellfish, cheese, clotted cream and vegetables, not to mention outstanding beers, ciders and wines. The Devon Food Book looks at the stories of some of the people behind this wealth of produce, and paints a fascinating picture of how Devon's food culture and landscape have evolved together. The story is completed by recipes from some of the county's most celebrated chefs.
The book features stunning photography by Carol's friend and long-term collaborator Adam Woolfit, with whom she published two earlier award-winning books on the food of Cornwall.
Before her sad early death from leukaemia, Carol was the Food Editor for the Western Morning News, having previously worked for the BBC. Carol was deeply passionate about her subject, and always very supportive of businesses such as the Mill. We are very proud to be part of this wonderful book, which is a fitting legacy to Carol's life and work.
The Mill is featured within the Baking Bread chapter of the book, as is a recipe from our chef Ed Chester.
Carol's book is available from our Devon Food Shop at the Mill, and costs £25. You can also purchase the book by mail-order by emailing us at escape@ottertonmill.com or calling 01395 568521 (note: postage & packing is charged extra).
