East Devon's Otterton Mill was delighted to welcome Hugo Swire last week. Mr Swire, Conservative MP for East Devon, visited the Mill in a bid to learn more about the challenges faced by small businesses in these difficult times.
Mill owners Caroline and Simon Spiller and William Casely enjoyed a broad ranging discussion with Hugo, including the imperative need for business growth in the face of spiraling commodity and over-head costs, which most small businesses are facing. The Mill's owners invited Hugo to encourage his government colleagues to do more to promote export opportunities and give a greater profile to the South West's tourism sector.
Mill co-owner Simon Spiller said "We are delighted Hugo came to talk with us. We had a constructive discussion and felt he really listened to our concerns and suggestions. We look forward to working with him in the future."
During his visit Mr Swire also enjoyed a tour of the Mill and met with the millers who demonstrated the ancient milling process. He also met with Steve Whitford, artisan jeweller who operates from a studio at the Mill.
