The mill sits in the heart of the Otter Valley, a stunningly beautiful stretch of countryside rich in wildlife. At the mill we have embarked upon a programme of work to help sustain this precious landscape; its flora and fauna.

The mill is already home to a number of declining bird species (we have a healthy population of house sparrows, grey wagtails, dippers and more common garden species such as robins and blackbirds - swallows also return annually to nest); the River Otter supports a wide selection of fish including eels, brown trout and flatfish - all seen regularly at the mill - and all of which provide food for resident otters and kingfishers.

Over the next few years, through a range of environmental projects we aim to actively encourage even more wildlife to the the mill. We support birds through the installation of nestboxes and bird feeding stations; we promote the growth of native plant species through planting schemes and careful land management. We will continue a policy of keeping the land surrounding the mill insecticide free and support local food producers by using only seasonal vegetables and organic produce if available.

In March 2004 we planted a small apple orchard on land adjacent to
the Mill. Each of the apple trees were species native to Devon and Somerset. Here they are:-

Devonshire Quarrenden - A popular Victorian apple eaten in summer. This Strawberry flavoured apple, believed to have French origins is best eaten from the tree.

Tom Putt - This large red striped eating apple with a sharp crisp taste comes from East Devon.

Lucombe’s Pine - A rich aromatic pineapple flavour, Lucombe’s Pine was raised in St Thomas, Exeter in 1800.

Major - This traditional Devon variety, (from the Exe Valley) is still used in many commercial orchards has a full bittersweet taste.

Woolbrook Russet - This local apple hails from Sidmouth! The large apples are dotted with russet and have a sweet sharp taste.

Upton Pyne - From Crediton, the large pink striped golden yellow fruit of the Upton Pyne are delicious cooking apples with a hint of pineapple.

Plum Vite - A July fruiting tree with a sweet, sharp juicy apple - from Exeter.

Hoary Morning – A delicious Somerset interloper!
