Our summer-long gallery exhibition is inspired by the sea, cliffs and beautiful natural environment of our unique coastline. A range of local artists will feature throughout the exhibition's run, starting with the wonderful Robert Dennis and Angie Harlock.
Robert is a self-taught painter working in oils. His atmospheric canvases depict marine scenes and ships of sail from a bygone era. You'll be transported back to the early 1900's and almost hear the gently lapping waves, the wind in the rigging, the men at work, the creaking timbers and the gulls overhead.
In contrast, Angie's sculptures are striking portrayals of the human form inspired by water and the coast. Two of the featured works depict surfers practising their craft as they ride the waves. They capture brilliantly a sense of movement, freedom, energy and joy. A third work entitled "Landscape figure: Devon Woman" portrays a reclining female figure outstretched in apparent abandonment, and is inspired by the plunging broken red-sandstone cliffs along the Jurassic coast. Other works by Angie include her signature water nymphs.
Artists joining the exhibition from June include glass artist Linda Barrack, whose featured work ranges from a new series of bowls inspired by oysters to coasters decorated with bright fish; photographer Kimberly Rainford who is showing her colourful images of the coast, from fishing boats to iconic Budleigh pebbles; Alison Everall whose etchings, prints and mixed media works are inspired by pebbles, shells and water; and felt-artist Sally Pepperel who creates framed landscapes of clouds and water.
