Exhibition: 'Three Devon Women'

Saturday 16th January 2010 – Monday 1st March 2010

The Mill's opening exhibition of 2010 showcases the work of three female Devon artists.

Kathy Ramsay Carr creates evocative, impressionist oil paintings as an instinctive response to the rugged coastlines, hills and Kathy Ramsay Carrspacious beaches of the British Isles. Having previously spent many years in British Columbia and then Mexico where she was Head of Design in the National University, Kathy now resides in Devon and paints from a studio overlooking 30 miles towards Dartmoor. It is this landscape that inspires her in her work, as well as that of North Cornwall, Wales and Scotland. For the Otterton Mill exhibition, Kathy is showing a range of pieces painted on aluminium sheets and reclaimed slate, rather than the traditional canvas. Kathy's work has been exhibited in many leading London galleries and is collected both in the UK and internationally.

Laurie MaitlandMixed media artist Laurie Maitland takes an abstract approach to her paintings, which particularly complements modern interior design. Her work is sold worldwide and her originals are now highly sought after. For this exhibition, Laurie will be exhibiting a range of new work using warm and earthy colours. Prior to painting full-time, Laurie owned and ran several successful businesses, including three art galleries, a furniture design business and a fine art publishing company. As her success as an artist grew, she sold her business interests to concentrate on her art and hasn't looked back. Hailed by the industry as an innovator and often copied, Laurie's designs have evolved to be constantly one step ahead of her contemporaries.

Alongside KathMargaret Johnson Plattery and Laurie's work is the 3d glassware of Margaret Johnson. Margaret has long been one of the Mill Gallery's most popular artists. Her range of glassware uses an unusual technique she has developed over many years, and melds straw silk fibre on re-cycled glass in diffMargaret Johnsonering textures and forms. Her bowls, plates and platters are distinctively vibrant in colour, ranging from oranges and reds to blues and greens. After studying Fine Art and Sculpture at Goldsmith's College, London, Margaret spent many years teaching in both schools and adult education before leaving to develop her own ideas. The exhibition features an extensive array of Margaret's creativity.

The exhibition runs from Saturday 16th January to Monday 1st March in the Mill's Gallery, which is housed on the first floor of the historic Mill building.  Works are displayed in the exhibition area set against the backdrop of the ancient mill workings.  Entry is free.
